Associate in Arts in Creative Arts

The Associate in Arts in Creative Arts is designed for students who seek a broad background in the visual and performing arts, such as drawing, painting, singing, instrumental performance, creative writing, dancing, and oral interpretation.

Program Learning Outcomes
  • Students will create and critique works of art in a supportive environment using traditional and new art media according to established principles of art and design. Students will be able to communicate orally and in writing about art and design related topics.
  • Students will use critical thinking to analyze, compare and contrast world cultures and belief systems through a study of anthropology, philosophy, history, languages, and/or the humanities.
  • Students will develop critical thinking skills as they analyze, compare and contrast, and trace the development of art forms from different parts of the world, from ancient to modern times.
 

To earn this degree, students must meet the following requirements: 
a. Completion of 60 degree applicable units with an overall GPA of 2.0. 
b. Completion of a minimum of 18 semester units in the major with a grade of C (or P) or better. 
c. Completion of the Associate in Arts graduation requirements.

Please note not all classes are offered each semester. For sections with honors courses, select either the honors version or the non-honors version

The program requires completion of 18 units in the following two areas:

  • I. Applied Arts (total of 6 units from one or more of the Creative Arts disciplines). Courses in which the student participates in the arts, such as drawing, painting, singing, instrumental performance, creative writing, dancing, and oral interpretation.

  • II. History or Theory (total of 12 units). Courses in which the student studies the history and/or theory of Creative Arts related subjects. The student should complete 3 units in each of the following four disciplines: Art, English, Dance, and Music. The following courses are recommended in this area (relevant courses not on this list may also be approved on a course-by-course basis):

Career/Transfer Opportunities

The Associate in Arts in Art transfers to most four-year colleges. Students who complete the Associate in Arts in Creative Arts at Mission College may wish to complete a four-year Creative Arts major leading to a Bachelor of Arts Degree at San Jose State University, to which all units completed in this program at Mission College will transfer.
